Il Laboratorio di Archeologia del Vicino Oriente nasce con il compito di indagare aspetti della civiltà vicinorientale, applicando tecnologie basate preferibilmente su programmi open source per favorire l’adozione di strumenti di ricerca liberamente condivisibili. Svolge attività finalizzate sia alla ricerca che alla didattica.
Nel campo della ricerca, sono sviluppati progetti incentrati soprattutto sullo studio della ceramica dell'età del Ferro e della geografia storica delle regioni interessate. Nel campo della didattica vengono organizzati seminari, workshops, conferenze, oltre a sostenere le attività dei corsi di Geografia storica del Levante mediterraneo attivato presso la laurea specialistica di Archeologia e di Archeologia e storia dell'arte del Vicino Oriente attivato presso la nuova Laurea magistrale in Archeologia e Scienze dell'Antichità.
The main goal of the “Laboratorio di Archeologia del Vicino Oriente” (Laboratory of Near Eastern Archaeology) is to study different topics concerning the Near Eastern civilizations. The Laboratory focuses on research tools mainly (but not exclusively) based open source technologies, taking into account open and standard formats, so that data are easily sharable among scholars. The laboratory developes both research and educational projects.
As far as the research is concerned, the projects carried on by the Laboratory are mainly focused on the Iron Age pottery and on the historical geography of the ancient Near East. As far as education activities are concerned, conferences, meetings and workshops are organized, as well as courses of “Historical Geography of the Levant” and "Archaeology and Art History of the Ancient Near East", that are eligible for the MA Degrees in Archaeology (“Laurea specialistica di Archeologia” and "Laurea magistrale in Archeologia e Scienze dell'Antichità") at the Siena University.
