Aging happens to everybody so it should not come as a surprise that a great deal of research has gone into the subject. People are living a lot longer these days than they used to thanks to the progress that has been made in modern medicine. However the aging population presents problems of its own. Therefore there is a great deal that we need to learn about the aging process in order to address these problems.
One of the major areas of research when it comes to aging is the illnesses that come with it. It is largely just accepted that as we get older we will become more prone to illness than we were when we were younger. The question is why is that and what can be done about it. There is also a great deal of research that goes into finding better ways to treat the illnesses that affect older people. In most cases the goal is to be able to extend the lives of people by reducing the effects of age related illness.
Another area of research is in improving the quality of life of older people. As they get older their mobility will be affected as will their cognitive functions. Research is being done on ways to reduce the impact and in fact to slow the aging process altogether. This involves studying the actual process of aging itself in order to determine what the effects of aging are and the actual mechanisms that allow age to affect health.
Much of the research of aging looks at the effect that it has society as a whole. With our currently aging population this is an area where more research is going to be needed. As the population gets older there is going to be a major change in society as a whole. This is going to mean that there needs to be changes in the social programs that the government offers. There is a great deal of research that needs to be done in order to determine just how society will be affected. A lot of the research is going to have to focus on determining just how long people are going to live so that policies can be set accordingly.
One of the biggest issues that the aging population is going to present is that it will have a major impact on our medical system. As people get older they tend to need more medical care because of the increased number of illnesses that they suffer from. The result is that there will likely need to be major changes in the way that the medical system operates in order to meet the increased demand. This is an area of major research currently. The biggest issue is simply in determining just how we are going to pay for the increased usage of the medical system.
