Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system works. Given that nervous system controls everything else in the body it is a major area of medical research. Because of the complicated nature of the brain the field is very interdisciplinary and requires the work of experts in many different fields. This would include experts in fields far removed from traditional medicine like philosophy and mathematics. Currently neuroscience is one of the fields where the biggest breakthroughs are being made.
One of the most basic elements of neuroscience is research is working out how the nervous system works at a cellular level. Over the last few years scientists have made great progress in determining just how the brain works but there is still a long way to go. Most of the work at this level is dedicated to determining just how the brain processes the signals that it receives. This is largely done through the neurons in your brain but the exact mechanism by which this works is not well understood so there is a lot of scope for research.
Another important area of neuroscience research is in figuring out just how the nervous system works as a system. The brain tells the rest of the nervous system what to do through a series of neural circuits but it is not clear how these circuits form or how messages get transmitted down them. Understanding this would open up whole new areas of medicine since the brain controls almost everything that the body does. There has been considerable progress in this field but there is still a long way to go before scientists are anywhere close to understanding how the nervous system works.
Another important area of research in neuroscience is the study of cognitive and psychological functions. This is research that is being done to understand the mechanisms by which the brain thinks and learns. Particularly it is the study of how the neural circuitry makes all of this happen.
In order to learn more about how the nervous system works it has become necessary to get a better look at it. For this reason a major area of research is on imaging and diagnostic work. Over the last few years imaging technology has improved dramatically allowing for a much more detailed view of the nervous system, particularly of how it functions. This has led to major breakthroughs in the study of neuroscience.
One of the most important areas of neuroscience research is the work that is being done to turn the better understanding of how the nervous system works into medical treatments. This is known as translational research and it is a field that is of growing importance. As more and more is being learned about the nervous system there are more medical procedures that can be performed with the result being that more diseases can be cured.
